Questions to ask yourself
to determine if you may be experiencing Post Abortion
Syndrome:
-
Do you find yourself
struggling to turn off the feelings connected to your
abortion(s), perhaps telling yourself over and over
again to forget it?
-
Are you affected by
physical reminders of your abortion, i.e., babies,
pregnant women, baby clothes? Are you uncomfortable
around children?
-
Are there certain times
of the year when you find yourself depressed, sick or
accident prone, such as the anniversary date of the
abortion or the month of the would-be birth?
-
Are you in a situation
where you could find yourself faced with another
unplanned pregnancy?
-
Have you experienced a
substantial increase in drug or alcohol use or any
self-destructive behavior, i.e., eating disorders,
abusive relationships, increased sexual activity?
-
Have you experienced
periods of prolonged depression and/or suicidal
thoughts since your abortion?
-
Have you experienced
any peculiar reactions, i.e., nightmares, flashbacks,
or hallucinations (such as hearing a baby cry)
relating to the abortion experience?
-
Are you able to talk
about abortion? When abortion is discussed, are you
overcome with strong feelings of panic or anxiety?
-
If you do not have
children, do you fear that you will never be able to
have them? If you do have children, do you find
yourself being overprotective or unable to bond with
them?
-
Do you tend to look at
your life in terms of "before" and
"after" the abortion(s)? Has your
self-esteem changed?
Other Benefits of a
Support Group:
The post-abortive women
often feels a strong sense of isolation - as if she is all
alone with her feelings. The support group is composed of
other post-abortive women and trained volunteers (most of
whom are post-abortive also) who will comfort and provide
a safe environment for her to deal with pain.
Poem: Unknown Author
If I knew then
what I know now,
You never would have died.
I'd have held you close
And nurtured you;
And kept you by my side.
I'd have sung you songs
And treasured you
More than silver
More than gold;
But this song is all I'll
give
to the babe I'll never hold.
I've never written poetry
That hasn't been a praise;
To the LORD who wept with me
And held me through those days.
Jesus, now I'm asking,
I know You hear my plea,
Won't you take that child in Your hands,
And hold my babe for me.
